Overview

This unit gives a rapid overview of the earliest civilisations through to the first world empires. We cover the period from 3500 BCE until 500 BCE. Over six lessons, students explore the first civilisations in ancient Mesopotamia, to the kingdoms of ancient Egypt and the rise of the Persian Empire and the clash with Ancient Greece. Students learn about the invention of writing and how to analyse the benefits and limitations of written sources in history, using Herodotus as an example.
